Disaster Relief
In the wake of the recent disaster of Hurricane Katrina, Malta realized it's ultimate goal of "Bridging the Gap for the Homeless in Crisis." Malta Board Members became aware of the need for housing for larger families and the need for networking of churches and organizations throughout this area in order to provide optimum aid to those displaced by the hurricane.
Vacancies in the Transitional Living Center house provided us with the opportunity to make available a four bedroom apartment. After a 24-hour "extreme apartment makeover," Malta was able to welcome a family of seven, who we then helped register for school and get settled in the community. Nine months later, at the end of the school year, this family was able to return to Louisiana. In addition, Malta assisted another Katrina family, a single mother and her four children as they settled into local housing. Malta was instrumental in helping her to find employment, to furnish her new home and to make necessary local connections.
Thanks to the generous support of local churches and individuals, we were able to supply these families with furniture and other items and gift cards to local supermarkets, clothing stores, convenience stores and restaurants.
